NGO Research Group Discusses the Mining Industry’s Response to Above-Ground Risks -- Political, Environmental, and Social -- and the No Dirty Gold Campaign on the CBC Radio Program “The Current”
CAMBRIDGE, Mass., Dec. 13, 2005 – (PRNewswire) – NGO Research Group Managing Director and mining industry expert Alex Gorbansky appeared on the CBC Radio Program “The Current” on December 12th, 2005 to discuss the above-ground risks facing the mining industry and to debate a representative of the NGO Earthworks on the recent “no dirty gold” campaign. “Managing above-ground risks for the mining industry is a matter of business imperative, not just of good corporate citizenship,” said Gorbansky “These issues are top of mind for CEOs and Boards as companies undertake new investments, acquisitions, and manage existing operations.”
Mr. Gorbansky observed that a key strategic challenge facing companies like BHPBilliton, Rio Tinto, AngloGold Ashanti, Barrick, Newmont, Placer Dome, and others is that new competitors from China and India often operate under a different set of standards. Gorbansky said, “We have an uneven playing field in the industry as the new players from BRIC countries do not necessarily operate by the same rules as many of the established firms.”
NGO Research Group believes that the major risks related to the growth of the global mining industry are above-ground. These risks include political instability, title security, regulatory and permitting uncertainty, environmental impacts, corruption, and rising social pressures. The combination of these factors can have an enormous impact on asset development and permitting, project costs, and acquisitions such as the current Barrick offer for Placer Dome.
