Frontier Strategy Group Managing Director Alex Gorbansky Discusses Vladimir Putin's Anti-US Rhetoric and Its Implications on CNBC
CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – (BUSINESS WIRE) – February 13, 2007 – Frontier Strategy Group Managing Director and natural resources expert Alex Gorbansky discussed Russian President Vladimir Putin's Munich conference speech and its implications on CNBC's "Power Lunch."
Mr. Gorbansky noted that Putin's comments reflect a desire by Russia to reassert its geopolitical influence on a broader scale: "Putin's rhetoric highlights Russia's ambition to regain its global influence in the wake of declining US power globally. The Russian President's speech was aimed at positioning Russia as a key power in a new multi-polar world."
Mr. Gorbansky argued that Putin's statements did not mean that Russia was now off limits to investors: "Despite the bluster and political maneuvering, there still remain significant opportunities for foreign investors in Russia. This was evidenced recently by the announcement that Chevron would be participating in the upcoming auction of the assets of the Yukos company seized by the Kremlin."
Commenting on recent speculation around the formation of a gas cartel led by Russia and key Middle Eastern gas producers, Gorbansky stated that "Putin's comments around the gas cartel should be viewed more as a political stratagem to gain influence in the Middle East rather than a real business reality given the structural issues associated with creating a cartel in the gas sector compared to the oil sector. Through his statements Putin is reaching out to the Iranian regime and effectively offering them a carrot for holding out against the West."
